FDA TAKES ACTIONThe FDA in response to numerous case reports, has required Lilly to properly warn patients being prescribed this medication. These case reports and additional studies have indicated a potential relationship between the use of Zyprexa and the development of diabetes and related blood sugar complications.In a September 17, 2003 letter to Eli Lilly, the FDA recommended that patients using Zyprexa be monitored for blood sugar abnormalities, particularly if they suffer from obesity or have a family history of diabetes. The recommendation by the FDA stated that "increased attention to the signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus may lead to earlier detection and appropriate treatment and thus may reduce the most serious outcomes."
