WHAT IS ZYPREXA?

Manufactured and marketed by Eli Lilly, Zyprexa is the brand name of the antipsychotic drug Olzanapine. Used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and for the maintenance of these ailments, Zyprexa is considered a psychotropic drug because it is a medication that affects the mind.

According to Eli Lilly, Zyprexa has been prescribed to more than 14 million people in 84 countries since it was introduced to the public in 1996. The drug manufacturer acknowledges that it is not entirely clear how Zyprexa or other psychotropics work, but the assumption is that the medication adjusts a chemical imbalance in the brain. The imbalance is thought to cause symptoms associated with schizophrenia and bipolar mania.

Antipsychotics such as Zyprexa are prescribed to patients who suffer from unique psychosis symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions. Zyprexa is used to help reduce fear and stress, focus attention, and to improve the condition of patients who hear voices.

It is suggested to immediately contact the doctor who prescribed the medication if while taking Zyprexa a patient experiences:

  • Suicidal thoughts;
  • Distorted perception of light, sound or taste;
  • Severe lack of emotion;
  • Severe feelings of withdrawal;
  • Feelings of extreme discouragement;
  • Feelings that the patient may hurt themselves or someone else;
  • New side effects or current side effects are getting worse.
